A Guide to Exfoliating Your Face with AHAs and BHAs
Exfoliation aims to remove dead skin cells so your skin looks smoother and brighter. Besides scrubs, exfoliation can be done chemically using AHAs and BHAs. This method tends to be more even and doesn’t require rubbing that can damage the skin’s surface.
AHAs, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, are water-soluble and work on the surface of the skin. They are suitable for dry or dull skin with uneven texture. BHAs, such as salicylic acid, are oil-soluble, so they can penetrate into the pores. That is why BHAs are often chosen by people with oily skin and clogged pores.
Start with a low concentration once or twice a week at night, then adjust based on how your skin responds. When you are just starting out, avoid using several exfoliants at once or combining them with retinol on the same night. Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier and leave your skin stinging and red.
AHAs can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, so use sunscreen every morning. If you have very sensitive skin, consult a dermatologist through DokterIN before you begin.
