That is why how you store medicines at home deserves as much attention as how you take them.

In general, store medicines in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid keeping medicines in a humid bathroom or in a car that can easily get hot. It is best to keep medicines in their original packaging so the label, directions for use and expiry date are easy to read.

Some preparations, such as certain drops, suppositories or insulin, require specific temperatures. Follow the storage instructions on the packaging, for example storing in the refrigerator but not in the freezer. Never freeze a medicine unless you are specifically instructed to.

Place your medicine box somewhere high and out of children’s reach. Check its contents regularly, and dispose of medicines that have expired or changed in color, smell or shape. If in doubt, ask a pharmacist about the proper way to store them.

Improper storage can damage the quality of medicines.
