The skin feels rough and tight, has fine scales, and is sometimes itchy. The areas most often affected are the legs, arms, hands and the areas around the elbows or knees.

Common causes include taking long, hot showers or baths, using harsh soaps, dry air in air-conditioned rooms, and sun exposure. As we age, the skin’s natural oil production also declines, making older adults more prone to dry skin.

However, dry skin can also be linked to medical conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, thyroid disorders, diabetes or kidney disease. Not drinking enough and frequent handwashing can also make it worse. It is therefore important to notice whether the complaint is accompanied by other symptoms.

See a doctor promptly if your dry skin comes with severe itching, cracks to the point of bleeding, shows widespread redness, or does not improve even though you have been keeping your skin well moisturized.

Dry skin can be triggered by weather, bathing habits, age and even certain diseases.
