This condition, known as the baby blues, generally improves within two weeks. However, if the sadness becomes more intense and lasts longer, it may be a sign of postpartum depression.

Signs to watch out for include deep sadness or emptiness, difficulty feeling connected to the baby, loss of interest, feeling incapable of being a good mother, and excessive anxiety. This condition is not the mother’s fault and can happen to anyone.

Support from a partner and family plays a very important role, for example by helping care for the baby so the mother can rest, and by listening without judgment. Consult a doctor, midwife, psychologist, or psychiatrist as soon as possible, either in person or through DokterIN.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, immediately call the emergency number 119, go to the nearest hospital emergency department, or ask someone you trust for help.

Feeling sad after giving birth can be more than the baby blues.
