Most HPV infections clear up on their own, but some high-risk types can persist for a long time and trigger cell changes that lead to cervical cancer, as well as other cancers in both women and men.

The HPV vaccine has been proven effective in preventing infection from the virus types that most often cause cancer. The vaccine provides the best protection when given before a person becomes sexually active, which is why it is recommended starting in adolescence. Even so, adults can still discuss the benefits of the vaccine with their doctor.

Vaccination does not replace screening. Women who are sexually active are still advised to have regular checkups such as a Pap smear or HPV test as recommended by their doctor, because early-stage cervical cancer often has no symptoms.

Ask a general practitioner or an obstetrician-gynecologist about the vaccination and screening schedule that suits your age and health condition.

HPV is a common virus that can lead to cervical cancer.
