How to Choose a Sunscreen and Understand SPF Numbers

Sunscreen is the most important skin protection step in your daily routine. Ultraviolet rays can trigger premature aging and dark spots, and even increase the risk of skin cancer. That is why daily sunscreen use is recommended, including on cloudy days or when you spend most of your time indoors near a window.

The SPF number indicates the level of protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. For everyday use, SPF 30 or higher is generally sufficient. Also choose a product labeled broad spectrum or carrying a PA rating so your skin is protected from UVA rays, which play a role in skin aging.

Match the sunscreen’s texture to your skin type. Oily skin tends to suit light gel or fluid textures, while dry skin is more comfortable with a cream texture. Apply a sufficient amount, roughly the length of two fingers for your face and neck, and reapply every two to three hours if you are active outdoors or sweating.
