Understanding Double Cleansing and How to Do It Properly
Double cleansing is a method of washing your face in two stages. The first stage uses an oil- or balm-based cleanser, while the second stage uses a water-based cleanser. This method aims to remove both oil-soluble and water-soluble impurities more thoroughly.
Oil-based cleansers are effective at breaking down makeup, water-resistant sunscreen and excess sebum. Apply it to a dry face, massage gently, then emulsify with a little water before rinsing. After that, follow with a gentle water-based cleanser to remove remaining dirt and residue from the previous product.
Double cleansing is most beneficial at night, especially if you wear makeup or sunscreen throughout the day. In the morning, a single cleanse with a gentle cleanser is generally enough. Avoid scrubbing your face too hard and choose a cleanser with a skin-friendly pH to keep your skin’s protective barrier intact.
If your skin feels dry, tight or stings after cleansing, the product or how often you use it may need to be adjusted.
